Derek Everett

Derek Everett, Ph.D., is a senior lecturer in the Department of History at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He specializes in Colorado and western history, with an emphasis on geography and politics. His research areas include Colorado, American West, American immigration and public architecture. He teaches courses in Colorado history, U.S. history, western America and U.S. immigration history.

Everett has presented regularly at academic conferences, public audiences and participates in scholarly and public history activities throughout Colorado. He has published three books including, “The Colorado State Capitol: History, Politics, Preservation,” “Creating the American West: Boundaries and Borderlands” and “Colorado Day by Day.” In addition, Everette is working on two composition projects about recent historic preservation and restoration efforts at the Colorado State Capitol and a study on the development and consequences of Colorado’s beet sugar industry in the early 20^th century.

Everett received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Arkansas, his master’s from Colorado State University and his bachelor’s from Western State College of Colorado.
