Inspired to transform your space during this spring’s COVID-19 stay-at-home orders? Start with these tips from hoarding disorder expert Jennifer Hanzlick, founder and CEO of Clutter Trucker junk removal company.

The first step to the clean and organized room, apartment or house of your dreams, Hanzlick said, is to make sure your mind is in the right place.

“I’ve heard it said, ‘A clear space creates a clear mind,’” she said. “I think it’s opposite: A clear mind will help you create a clear space.”

Hanzlick, a 1996 graduate of Metropolitan State University of Denver with a degree in Business Management, was climbing the corporate-finance ladder when the 2008 Great Recession struck. Finding herself out of work and helping her family clean out her grandmother’s hoard, Hanzlick decided to use her severance check to buy a dump truck, launch Clutter Trucker and dedicate herself to becoming a voice for those suffering from hoarding disorder.

“We can either choose to judge hoarding disorder, or we can choose compassion,” she said in her TEDx Talk at TEDx Boulder 2016. “Judgment and shame perpetuate this illness. So just remember next time you call someone a hoarder it’s not who they are. Look beyond the clutter.”
