Jeff Loats, Ph.D., is the director of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Design. at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He joined MSU Denver in 2017 as a nuclear and particle physics professor and has taught general studies courses such as Introduction to Physics; and Sound and Music Physics. 

Loats became the director of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Design in 2018. His areas of expertise include the impact of generative AI in higher education, scholarly teaching, research-based instructional strategies, active engagement, and general nuclear and particle physics. Additionally, he is interested in the application of research-based instructional strategies to higher education teaching. 

 He has spoken at multiple conferences such as The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD) conference about effective teaching and active engagement in higher education.

Loats earned his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Oregon State University and his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Fort Lewis College.
