About
Brandon Matthews, DMA, is chair and director of orchestral activities in the Department of Music at Metropolitan State University of Denver. His areas of expertise include orchestral conducting, music education, and collaboration with regional and international arts organizations.
In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Matthews integrates performance, mentorship, and community engagement through partnerships with orchestras and performing arts groups across Colorado. He has guest conducted ensembles in the United States and abroad, including the Berlin Sinfonietta, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas State University Symphony Orchestra.
Matthews brings extensive experience in conducting, piano performance, and arts collaboration to his work at MSU Denver. His teaching emphasizes musical excellence, creative leadership, and the transformative role of orchestral performance in higher education.
Matthews earned a doctor of musical arts in conducting from Arizona State University, where he studied with Timothy Russell and William Reber, and degrees in orchestral conducting and piano performance from Brigham Young University. He has also trained under renowned conductors including Kenneth Kiesler, Larry Rachleff, Harold Farberman, and Louis Lane.
