Scott Kerkmans, MBA, is an instructor and director of the Beer Industry Program in the School of Hospitality at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He coordinates the beer programs as well as professional relations with the beer industry.
As one of the first five Certified Cicerones in the world, Kerkmans is an expert voice in the world of craft beer and an advocate for beer education both at the professional level and in higher education. He was a professional brewer for more than four years, most recently at Alaskan Brewing, and sold beer for a major beer distributor in over 80 on premises accounts. Kerkmans has also been a Nationally Certified Beer Judge since 2005 and serves as judge at the Great American Beer Festival every year.
He helped found Draft Magazine and educated their editorial staff before being hired by Starwood Hotels as their chief beer officer in 2008. At Starwood, Kerkmans was responsible for choosing the beer sold at the hotel restaurants, hosted beer dinners and PR events around the world and designed their online training and education program for the staff. Kerkmans also runs his own consulting company called Beer Conscious Training and is the founder of Colorado Craft Beer Week. His research focus is on sensory analysis of beer.
Kerkmans received his Master of Business Administration from Regis University in 2019 and a bachelor’s in entrepreneurial studies from UNM Anderson School of Management in 2003.
