The Metropolitan State University of Denver men’s basketball team and President Janine Davidson, Ph.D., joined the Gold Crown Foundation on Friday, Nov. 9 in hosting more than 200 elementary and middle school students from Fort Carson, Colo., for a day of fun and games — and Denver Nuggets basketball.

The Gold Crown Foundation, co-founded by former MSU Denver trustee and former NBA player and coach Bill Hanzlik, prides itself on preparing young people for the game of life, even when life means spending time apart from loved ones who are in the military and deployed overseas.

“We wanted to do something for those (Fort Carson) soldiers, and nothing better than doing something for their kids,” Hanzlik said of the event, now in its seventh year. “If they know their kids are happy and having a good time, boom, that’s going to help their day out a little bit.”
